Music Theory > Intro

There is a formula used to create colors, to measure long distances, to figure how much you owe the Government. Oh-oh I'm losing you but wait, there's also formula's to learn how to play music.

Art Tatum - “You have to practice improvisation, let no one kid you about it!”

Using numbers, wait there you go again. No math here, just numbers to identify notes in the scale, you can learn to build beautiful chords and play solos over chord progressions.

George Russell -- and incidentally, I am not self-taught. Everybody who has given me a moment of beauty, significance or excitement has been a teacher.

The following formulas will show how to play major, minor, dominant, diminished and whole tone scales in any key. How to build chords from the scales mention. Play blues progressions in any key. An introduction to the II-V-I - chord progressions. And finally how to play solos over chord progressions.

Louis Armstrong - “If I don’t practice for a day, I know it. If I don’t practice for two days, the critics know it. And if I don’t practice for three days, the public knows it.”

By the way, If you have a keyboard with black and white keys on it, I suggest you use it to play the examples provided in the following lessons.

Charlie Parker - “Master your instrument, Master the music, and then forget all that bullshit and just play.”
