About George
Monday 2/6/2012

Ever since that fateful day (around 40 years ago) my brother turned me on to three albums, Cannonball Adderly, Bill Evans and Elvin Jones, I knew I had found the music for me. No other music inspired me so, and as a young pianist I knew that's what I wanted to play. Thanks Brother Jack for introducing me to those artists.

(The picture to the right is myself and my brother Jack. The guy in the middle is Chris Wing, he was Jacks best friend and also the little brother of Grace Wing. Grace eventually married and became better known as Grace Slick of the Jefferson Airplane.)

Tea

This was the band "Tea" Dave Bergen (dms) Drew Youngs (gtr) Mark Fisher (bass). We were the rhythm section of the Palo Alto High big band. Yeah things were different then in 1972.

At Palo Alto High, the big band was directed by Charles Dowd, who was a great musician and educator. I was elected to play in the "All Star" big band, which consisted of a bunch of kids from different schools. The coolest thing was playing concerts that included special guest. Highlights included drummer Elvin Jones and saxophonist John Handy.

In 1973 I joined the Foothill College big band (Los Altos, CA) and it too was a memorable experience. We also had special guest that included Chuck Mangione. I would recommend that all young musicians play in a school jazz ensemble.

My first real gig was offered to me by saxophonist John Handy while I was attending Foothill College. We played a number of gigs and opened for Weather Report, Grover Washington Jr. and Richard Pryor in 1974. John and I are still good friends and like to keep in touch. In February 2003 it was great to get together with many of his friends and play at his 70th birthday party. (This picture was taken 2006)

George Glover with Smoke

Here I am rehearsing with Smoke. I liked to think of our music as tone poems. Smoke was lead by the one and only Salah Webb.

We recorded at Fantasy Studio. Sorry to say that's as far as it went.

This was in '76, the year of our country's 200 year bicentennial. Thanks Mr. Golub for the pic.

Then there were those Top 40 gigs playing the Black Angus (remember when they had live music?) and Holiday Inn circuit for a number of years. This is "Midas Touch" in 1978. We played Canada and the western United States. Cool outfits eh!

Blazin

1979 through 1981, "Blazin" was a Top 40 band that toured and performed the pacific northwest areas.

From 93' through 97', I worked with my wife Nita (a wonderful vocalist) in a musical group called "A Touch of Class". This was a midi band featuring Johnny Almond on saxophone and flute. As a teenager I was a big fan of Johnny's work with John Mayall in the Mark-Almond band. The three of us enjoyed playing Horn blower gigs on the San Francisco bay and numerous special occasions.

It was a pleasure to work with Johnny, we have memorable experiences to reflect on from those special days. Johnny passed away Nov 18, 2009, but our memories of his playing, his friendship, and his kindness will live on.

George Glover @ Maestros

Between 1992 and 1999 I was the house pianist in two fine establishments. Beginning at the Holiday Inn ( Pleasanton) a few years, then simultaneously playing five years for Maestro's Ristorante in San Ramon. That was a beautiful gig, the atmosphere, the people, the acoustics of the dining room, and of course all the great musicians who worked with me there. Thanks to owner's Wally & Grace Young for inviting me to work in their beautiful restaurant.

Every weekend at Maestro's my jazz quartet performed. This musical collaboration featured some of these SF bay area musicians:
Saxophone: Bob Johnson, John Almond, Guido Fazio, Noel Jewkes
Drums: Achyutan, Kent Bryson, Pete Riso
Bass: Karen Horner, Ken Plourde, Cory Squaglia, Mario Suraci
Viola: Eric Golub

In 1999 we sold our humble home in Dublin, CA and moved to a more accommodating home in Antioch. With this move came a full time position as a web designer/developer with TriNet, a human resources company in San Leandro.

My current musical endeavor, Nita Hamilton and the George Glover Trio is something I'm very pleased with. I've been writing new arrangements for traditional jazz standards that offer an exciting touch to the music.

I'm playing a Roland RD-700GX keyboard that has oustanding piano qualities. Nita sings, and plays a Roland Handsonic 10 percussion instrument. Together with our bassist and drummer, we perform american jazz standards in venues throughout the San Francisco bay area.

I'm happy to say we are well received by our audiences and calendar dates are consistently booked.

There are so many fine musicians who have contributed to my musical journey up to this point. As the keyboardist in various bands, I have been fortunate to play with truly talented "local" artists such as vocalist Don Holland, guitarist/vocalist Mark Allen, saxophonists Bob Johnson and Guido Fazio, trumpetere Dave Bendigkeit, and jazz drummer Achyutan, all having contributed to my growth as a professional musician.

I must admit, sometimes I feel like I'm just getting started...

You know what they say, it's not over till the fat lady sings.

— Peace
